The Spectrum of Minimalism
Minimalism is our jam! Why? Because it's not just about getting rid of stuff. It's about living with less, and making room for the things that matter. How many times have you spent an evening tidying up instead of reading a new book or talking with a friend? How many sweaters do you have in the back of your closet that haven't seen the light of day since 2009?
Minimalism is a spectrum--some minimalists really cut back on personal possessions, which can be a huge lifestyle shift for many of us. Others just cut down on the shopping. Either way, minimalism is all about making sure our homes are simple, beautiful, and functional.
Why become a minimalist? Here are our top three reasons.
Help the environment (and the economy!). Fast fashion and companies like Amazon can be really harmful to the environment. Most 'fast' products are imported, made by people who aren't paid a living wage, and contribute a lot of pollution to the communities that host factories. Buying American-made or 'slow' fashion or shopping at small businesses can be more expensive, but these products tend to last longer, and have a great impact on your local economy!
Give back to your community. If you're cutting down on unnecessary items in your home, you can donate them! That way, your lifestyle change will directly benefit the people who live in your community. Donating to local thrift stores also supports jobs for those employees.
Make room for the things that matter. What do you wish you had space for in your life? More time to read? A rowing machine? More time to spend with the family? If you're not managing clutter, money and time become more readily available--and the sky's the limit!
